The 2012 edition of SYC’s venerable Race to the Coast saw unusually trying conditions for this event. The first two-thirds of the race was entirely upwind with the early southeast breeze dying briefly, only to return with a vengeance in the form of a 20-knot easterly and rain in Lake Borgne. As the fleet entered the Mississippi Sound, the wind began to slacken and veer southward, allowing most boats to fly their spinnakers for a time, at least. Eleven boats finished out of nineteen starters.
First to finish, with Class A, Fleet Overall and Elapsed Time honors, was John Lee’s LESSON #1. Class B was won by Commo. Dwight LeBlanc, III aboard BRUJA.
